Foreign Language

Few majors will provide such opportunities as those in foreign languages.  With this ever expanding world, and as it keeps on getting smaller, there is more of a need than ever for people to be able communicate with businesses in other countries.  Of course, it is not a bed of roses, but this major could take you wherever you want to go.  Especially if you have goals of traveling abroad, there will be few majors that makes someone so flexible.

Interpreters are some of the most valuable assets, especially in the business world.  These days, it is crucial to be able to speak with people from other nationalities.  That is why those who study foreign languages usually end up being higher salary earners.  It is a skill that quite few have, yet it is so incredibly valuable.


Finding Money

If you are someone who is short on cash, yet still have dreams of a degree, then you might be comforted to know that there is a ton of scholarship money out there just waiting for you.  Now, it is crucial that you keep your GPA as high as you can, but if you are at least an average student, you will have no problem finding someone to pay for your schooling.


Charitable Cash

Foreign languages is saturated in diversity and culture, and there are quite a few organizations out there that are dedicated to the promotion of those values.  With this in mind, it is easy to see how hundreds of these scholarship programs can exist.  This is going to be one of your most lucrative place to search.

Also, since we mentioned the private sector above, there are going to be lots of loan repayment programs.  Consider your opportunities.

As you can see, the possibilities have absolutely no limit.  You will not have problems getting into careers, and many of the businesses or organizations that will hire you, will repay your loans as well.  Also, companies like UPS will actually pay for your schooling.  Especially since UPS delivers nationally, you will definitely be in line for a good amount of funding.

With going into Foreign Languages, there will be lots of ways that you can not only have a rewarding job, but you will be very needed in the marketplace.  As the world becomes smaller, and even the US becomes more culturally diverse, your skill set will be crucial.

Here are some scholarships that might start you off:

Ohio State University’s Foreign Language Center serves as the clearinghouse for foreign language scholarships:

  • Huntington International Fellowships are uniquely designed to prepare students heading into business, industry or education for a career with multi-cultural aspects. Applicants must be interested in exploring a language and culture up close and personally with a focused intent on using it for professional goals. Scholarships are at least $1,000.
  • Scholarships through the Office of International Education.

The Committee on Constitutional Cooperation sponsors the Foreign Language Enhancement Program, an opportunity for students from a dozen colleges who wish to study a foreign language not typically studied; so no Spanish or German here. However, applicants wishing to study Arabic or Chinese among others may garner valuable scholarship money to study at a partner CIC University.

Students studying foreign languages at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, should explore their options for the following scholarships:

  • Foreign Language Advisory Committee Scholarships offer one outstanding scholar up to $1,250. Applicants may use the funds for study abroad program if they choose to and must be a declared major in the foreign language department.
  • Alliance Francaise of Birmingham Scholarships clearly go to a French major. Up to $1,500 is given away to the most talented student.
  • Alliance Francaise of Birmingham Study Abroad Scholarships are similar to the above, but the $1,000 is earmarked for a study abroad program.
  • Spanish Pre-Med Scholarships offer a $500 award to the Spanish student who will be continuing onto a medical program of study.
  • Spanish Scholarships go to an outstanding Spanish major who is new to the department. Awards are $750.
  • NEXOS: Spanish Study Abroad Scholarship goes to a student heading off to a study abroad program. Up to $1,000.
