African American

There are countless great African Americans that have truly changed the world for the better.  Unfortunately, many are still at a disadvantage, coming from homes where there are no college graduates.  That can be a little rough, especially trying to go through the college process.  When you are the first to go through the financial aid process, it can be both daunting and confusing.  Nothing is more scary than the prospect of paying for college and worrying about not doing well in classes.  With all that stress, you might be happy to know that there are scholarships that are tailored just for African Americans.

Black Students Who Excel

If you are a black student with a habit for excelling at everything you do, then there is no shortage of people who want to make sure that you can pay for school.  Unfortunately, there are too many instances where taking out school loans will get you only half way, before your credit becomes too overloaded.  It is because of that that there are many students out there that had to quit school, only getting half-way through his or her degree.

So, if you are a black student who just keeps on succeeding, or you have desire to be the next great Black American, then you might want to listen up, because these next opportunities might just be the key to open that door.

Foundational Support

One of the best places for minorities to go is to certain foundations, especially if you have already proven to be an excellent student.  One of the reason for this is that many charities exist for the express purpose of helping those at a disadvantage.  So, if you are a minority and you are considered low income, then you fall under that bracket.  There are many funds and nonprofit organizations out there that would like you to succeed, and paying for your college is one way that you can do it.

Government Opportunity

Of course, the government is another way that you will be able to get the funding that you need in order to go to school.  If you know the system, then a simple phone call to Sallie Mae will reveal no fewer than a bunch of scholarship and grant options to have you sitting int college classes in no time.  That is perhaps the most surefire and lucrative way of getting the funds you need in order to get through school!

Different Scholarships

  • The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS), funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was established in 1999 to provide outstanding African American, American Indian/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific Islander Americans, and Hispanic American students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education, in all discipline areas and a graduate education for those students pursuing studies in mathematics, science, engineering, education, or library science. The goal of GMS is to promote academic excellence and to provide an opportunity for thousands of outstanding students with significant financial need to reach their fullest potential.
  • Annually, NABJ awards deserving students interested in pursuing a career in journalism awards of more than $30,000 in NABJ scholarships. Each scholarship is worth up to $5,000. Scholarships are open to any foreign or American born students, currently attending an accredited four-year college/university in the U.S. or those who are candidates for graduate school.

To be considered and to receive a scholarship, all applicants must be a member of NABJ. The requirements make up one complete packet for this program. Students who want to apply for the program must submit four complete packets to the national office. This includes students looking for the broadest internship.
